DEWEY WRIGHT SPENCE, JR.


 

 

 

LITTLETON—Mr. Dewey Wright Spence, Jr., 79, a longtime resident of Halifax County and retired from Champion International Paper Company on January 1, 1996, with 43 ½ years of service in the Maintenance Department, passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Warren Hills Nursing Center.

 

Mr. Spence was born December 5, 1933 on the Gowen farm, out skirts of Halifax, NC, the son of the late Dewey W. Spence, Sr. and Emily Nethery Spence.

 

Dewey served in the U. S. Army from 1953 to 1955. His time was mainly with the 529 Military Police Co. in Heidelberg, Germany.  He loved hunting, fishing, and his woodworking shop.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents Dewey W. Spence, Sr., and Emily Nethery Spence, two sons, David Lee and Thomas Edward Spence. He was also preceded in death by his first wife Edith Lee Spence.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Haskins Spence; two sons, Dewey W. Spence, III of Smithfield, Va., Charles B. (Charlie Buck) Spence and his wife, Wanda of Littleton, NC; one daughter, Lisa S. Harris and husband, Melvin of Roanoke Rapids, NC; six grandchildren, Chasity Shevlin, Sharon Carter, Gina Massey, Samantha Massey, Meredith Harris, and Thomas Spence, Jr. and many great-grandchildren.

 

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 PM Friday, February 15, 2013 at Wrenn Clarke & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service, 1015 West Fifth Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

 

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 16, 2013 in Crestview Memorial Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids, NC, with the Rev. Sue Owens officiating.
